Since 1978 the DAKAR Rally has been world’s most famous cross-desert rally. The Paris – Dakar rally was originally set in Northern Africa; in 2009 the off-road event moved on to South America. The first DAKAR Rally started on 26 December 1978 in Paris and ended on 14 January 1979 in Dakar. The Rally was founded by Frenchman Thierry Sabine, who died in a helicopter accident during the DAKAR Rally in 1986. Today the DAKAR Rally is organised by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), a French enterprise that also organises the Tour de France.
